A lot of people are battling booze in North Carolina, including many in Charlotte. Consider these statistics from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services:
- Excessive alcohol use is the third leading preventable cause of death in North Carolina.
- In 2017, 26 percent of all traffic fatalities on N.C. roads were alcohol-related.
- Eleven percent of those who drink in North Carolina report doing so excessively.
- Excessive alcohol use cost North Carolina an estimated $7 billion in 2010.
Those statistics point to a clear and urgent need for comprehensive alcoholism treatment, but fortunately for residents in or near Charlotte, one of the best alcohol rehabs in the nation is less than four hours to the west, just on the other side of the Great Smoky Mountains. Cornerstone of Recovery, located between Knoxville and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, has provided thousands of alcoholics with the tools they need to not only stop drinking, but change their habits, their coping skills and their responses to the challenges life throws their way so that the need to drink is lifted from them.
We do it all from a picturesque, four facility campus located on 25 acres to which we moved in 2017 – a far cry from the humble 18-bed facility in which we started out in 1989. But while we’ve grown in scope and size, treating patients from across the nation – including many from Charlotte – our approach to alcoholism remains the same: a combination of traditional, 12 Step-based recovery combined with evidence-based treatment modalities that provide our clients with the best psychotherapy available. It all begins in our safe, medically supervised detox program, after which they’ll transition to one of our four residential inpatient programs: Newcomers, for first-time patients just starting to get a handle on their drinking problem; Recovery Renewal, for individuals with previous alcohol rehab experience or periods of sobriety who have relapsed; Young Adult, a more active program for men ages 18 to 26; and our Women’s Program, which allows female clients to deal with issues unique to them in a protected environment.
At Cornerstone, our approach to alcoholism treatment involves so much more than helping our patients put down the bottle. We believe in a whole-person approach to alcohol rehab, which is why we encourage physical activity in our state-of-the-art fitness center and help clients with co-occurring mental health disorders get the dual diagnosis treatment they need by our psychiatric team. From our on-campus ropes course to 12 Step meetings to peer support groups to educational lectures, Cornerstone is so much more than just another alcohol rehab.
For residents in or near Charlotte, it’s an opportunity to leave North Carolina for a while and reinvent themselves, so that they return home as the responsible, productive members of society we know them to be. And because we’re in network with most major commercial and private insurance plans, we can help those individuals get started on their sobriety journey as quickly as possible. At Cornerstone of Recovery, a whole new life awaits.

As one of the best alcohol and drug rehab facilities in the nation, Cornerstone of Recovery offers a time-tested model of treatment for a variety of substance abuse issues. Our foundation is built on the traditions of 12 Step-based recovery conceived by organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous, combined with evidence-based clinical tools that are used to target the issues that predate substance use and abuse. Every patient is assigned a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses the needs of the whole person: the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual issues that are inextricably tied to alcoholism.
At Cornerstone, we believe that alcoholism is a disease, and that alcoholics aren’t bad people trying to become good; they’re sick people who need to get well. Through our various treatment services, we focus on so much more than just the substances that result in alcoholism and drug addiction, and our approaches have proven effective for patients from Charlotte, North Carolina and throughout the rest of the country as well.

Those who wish to find sobriety can certainly do so in Charlotte, but few programs offer the sort of treatment that Cornerstone does. Located on 25 acres in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, our bucolic campus is a four-facility oasis of serenity and knowledge, so that those who come to us desperate for a way out of alcoholism can stop drinking, emerge from the fog and find the clarity and peace of mind they so desperately need to move forward with a life free of alcohol’s bonds.
At Cornerstone, we provide a comprehensive restructuring of the body, mind, heart and spirit, so that patients who come to us can return to Charlotte upon the completion of treatment better prepared for a fulfilling future.
