SLF Sober Living Facility Halfway House

Sober Living Facility (SLF) – Halfway House Knoxville TN

Sober Living is an affordable way to extend the immersive recovery experience that’s begun when patients first come to Cornerstone of Recovery for residential inpatient treatment.

It’s often a full-circle journey for individuals who struggle with alcoholism and addiction: The majority of the time, a drug and alcohol rehab is the last place they want to go, even if they realize they need it. However, as their bodies are cleansed of drugs and alcohol and their minds begin to clear and they discover the hope that a life of recovery can provide, something changes.

A switch is flipped, and when they near the end of treatment, they’re often hesitant to leave. They’ve found security and serenity in a treatment center environment, and they’re concerned with how their newfound recovery will allow them to meet life’s challenges outside of it.

That’s where Sober Living can make all of the difference. It’s a supportive living environment in which participants become part of a community of peers all working toward the same goal: strengthening the foundation laid during residential inpatient through interaction with the wider world, while returning to the safety of that community each evening.

Sober Living is exactly that: A place where newly recovering addicts and alcoholics can stay while they find their “sea legs,” so to speak. Addiction and alcoholism can be tumultuous journeys that offer familiar comfort, even if the familiar is miserable. Sobriety, on the other hand, is something altogether new and different. It’s more than simple abstinence; it’s a lifestyle change, and implementing new habits and coping skills can take some getting used to.

In order to acclimate slowly and safely back into the world beyond the Cornerstone campus, we encourage every individual who seeks recovery with us to continue to build on that recovery foundation laid during inpatient treatment. Extending your recovery journey through our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides you with additional time over the safety net of a supportive environment, and our experience has proven that individuals who participate in IOP while staying in our sober living facilities have a better chance at long-term recovery.

For eight weeks, patients who transition from one of our residential program to IOP continue the work they’ve begun in groups and therapy activities, building on the therapy begun during their treatment stay and making the structures of their lives solid and sound. And as residents of Cornerstone of Recovery’s sober living facilities, patients maintain the security blanket given to them in our residential programs. At the same time, Sober Living provides many of the freedoms of living at home while still harnessing the power of an encompassing recovery community.

How does that work? It provides accountability and community support that allows individuals to experience life outside of a treatment center while being able to come back and process their reactions to real-world experience: stimuli, challenges, obstacles, stressors and more. In addition, the longer an individual remains part of the Sober Living community, the more freedoms they earn, from their cell phones to driving privileges to weekend passes that allow them the opportunity to return home, where they can experience life on life’s terms in incremental bursts and then return to the Sober Living community and process it.

By combining IOP and sober living, our clients are able to remain among a group of peers all working toward the same goal, and the accountability they give to one another often far surpasses what they have at home. Our sober living housing includes rooms in both Hood Hall, our on-campus residential tower, and in off-campus housing nearby, where our Transportation driver provide rides to and from campus for regular meetings, classes, activities and volunteer opportunities.

As part of Cornerstone’s sober living community, they’ll be placed in transitional housing that grants them more independence than they had in residential inpatient but still provides a safe environment in which to strengthen their journey. They’re provided with linens, a weekly food voucher and transportation, as well as to meetings and outside medical appointments. Cornerstone staff members are a daily presence at on- and off-campus sober living facilities, but residents are given an opportunity to apply some of the tools of recovery: compromise, conflict management, acceptance and vulnerability among them. It’s a nontoxic environment that allows sober living residents to take incremental steps toward becoming responsible, productive members of society once again.

At the same time, it allows them to expand their support network and forge bonds with fellow sober living residents that often turn into lifelong friendships. They’re given an opportunity to become a larger part of the East Tennessee recovery community, which teaches them to utilize recovery principles found in similar communities around the nation, so that when they return home – just down the road or on the other side of the country – they do so with the knowledge that recovery is available to anyone, anywhere, if they choose to find it.

We understand that the decision to remain part of the Cornerstone community isn’t an easy one. Many patients feel the overwhelming need to return to work or family life as soon as possible, but time and time again, we’ve seen patients fall prey to the mistaken belief that they’re “ready” for a return to the outside world.

Sometimes, they are … but other times, they find that a lack of an outside support system and the daily rigors and stresses of life push their recovery down their list of priorities. They begin to skip recovery meetings, and their newfound sobriety gives them a false sense of security. Sooner or later, however, life shows up. Their recovery is tested, and because they’ve pulled away from a supportive recovery community and are no longer part of a treatment environment, those tests can often be demanding and overwhelming.

Sober living doesn’t absolve residents of the trials and tribulations of life on life’s terms, but it does give them a place to return to at the end of the day that is safe, secure and supportive. It’s not permanent, but it can make all of the difference when it comes to putting together a life outside of treatment that’s built on solid recovery principles.
